Inspired by the 2006 awards-season favorite Akeelah and the Bee, Letitia Wright took up acting, and in the relatively few years since, she’s made quite a name for herself. Though she’s best known for her role in the 2018 summer box-office smash Black Panther (as well as subsequent entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe), she’s also appeared in quite a lot of other movies and TV shows and is set to star in the upcoming Agatha Christie adaptation Death on the Nile.
From austere crime dramas to tantalizing sci-fi thrillers, here’s a comprehensive list of the 10 best things Letitia Wright has been in, based on data collected by review aggregator site, Rotten Tomatoes.
Black Mirror (2011 - ) - 83%
Black Mirror is an anthology series focusing on futuristic, often reality-bending scenarios spinning off of classic elements of sci-fi, such as artificial intelligence and simulated realities. The show’s season four finale, “Black Museum,” stars Letitia Wright as the titular museum’s solitary patron. As she takes in the various exhibits, their haunting backstories are slowly revealed.
“Black Museum” received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics and audiences, with many finding its final twist weaker than those in Black Mirror’s previous episodes. However, Wright’s performance was enough of an outlier to earn her a Primetime Emmy nod.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018) - 85%
The third film in the Avengers series, shot back-to-back with the following year’s Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War follows the superheroes multi-planetary mission as they attempt to stop the genocidal, finger-snapping supervillain Thanos from collecting all six Infinity Stones.
Avengers: Infinity War received praise from critics for its acting, visuals, characters, and story, and was largely viewed as a fitting penultimate entry to the multi-part Avengers story, more than 10 years in the making.
My Brother The Devil (2013) - 90%
2012’s My Brother the Devil is a coming-of-age drama following Rash and Mo, two brothers of Egyptian descent living in London. After his best friend is killed, the street-smart Rash decides to leave behind his life of crime, leading the opportunist Mo to try to get into his brother’s old gang. Letitia Wright appears as Mo’s strict but well-meaning Muslim girlfriend, Aisha, giving a striking performance, despite her little screen time.
My Brother the Devil received positive reviews from critics for its moving story, gripping screenplay, and outstanding performances.
Cucumber (2015) - 91%
Running concurrently with E4’s Banana and 4oD’s Tofu, Channel 4’s Cucumber is a series focusing on a middle-aged gay man splitting up with his boyfriend of nine years to start a new life.
The series’ writing and drama were both praised by critics, with Ellen E. Jones of The Independent stating that the show had “interesting characters, great lines, and compelling situations,” and that its handling of “middle-aged desperation” gave it a universal appeal.
Doctor Who (1963 - ) - 93%
Doctor Who is arguably the longest-running sci-fi series still on television, and with countless films, spin-offs, video games, and merchandise – plus 13 different Doctors – its reputation of universal critical acclaim precedes it.
Wright appeared in the series 9 episode, “Face the Raven,” as Anahson, a superhuman girl who is disguised as a boy to prevent others from discovering her ability to see backward and forward in time.
HUMANS (2015 - 2018) - 94%
The Channel 4 sci-fi series Humans takes place in a future where Earth is populated by “synths,” humanoid robots programmed with artificial intelligence to make them fit in.
Wright appeared in the series during its second season for a recurring role in which she plays a “synthie” – a human who emulates synth behavior as a style choice.
Avengers: Endgame (2019) - 94%
Wright is one of few Hollywood stars who can say they had a role in the highest-grossing movie of all time – that film being 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which made more than $2.79 billion in ticket sales.
The Infinity War follow-up features Wright reprising her role from Black Panther as Shuri, resurrected by Hulk to fight in the final battle for the fate of the universe.
Top Boy (2011 - ) - 95%
Top Boy, a crime drama series about the ups and downs of the drug trade, was canceled by Channel 4 in 2014, despite having a decent fan following. Recently, however, it has been resurrected through the combined power of Drake and Netflix.
While she won’t reappear in the series’ upcoming fourth season, Letitia Wright did have a recurring role in season one as Chantelle, an ambitious and persuasive drug dealer with a charismatic personality.
Black Panther (2018) - 96%
2018’s Black Panther follows T’Challa/Black Panther (played by the late Chadwick Boseman), the newly-appointed ruler of the hyper-advanced African nation of Wakanda. He is challenged at his coronation by his previously-unknown cousin Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), an American soldier who plans to take over Wakanda and reroute its resources towards helping oppressed people of African descent in other nations rise up against their corrupt governments.
Wright appears as T’Challa’s sister, Shuri, a tech wiz who designs her brother’s various gadgets. Black Panther earned near-universal critical acclaim, with praise directed at its story, screenplay, and visuals, as well as the casting of Boseman, Jordan, and Wright.
Banana (2015) - 100%
Banana is an anthology series that, like its sister series Tofu and Cucumber, focuses on the day-to-day lives of LGBT people in Manchester, England. Wright appears in the same role in both Banana and Cucumber – she plays Scotty, a shy lesbian prone to obsessive love.
Banana received critical acclaim for its characters, humor, and story, and currently has a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
