Deadpool 2 is less than a month away and to tying into the upcoming release, the antihero’s first adventure is getting a surprise re-release TODAY with a special collectible Blu-ray and 4K UHD steelbook case. 20th Century Fox is planning a swinging party to celebrate the merc with a mouth coming into the lives of audiences everywhere before he introduces a new collection of heroes May 18th to help grow the X-Men universe.
Deadpool just had its FX television premiere earlier this month and while Deadpool won’t be getting his own animated series anymore on that network it’s test footage has leaked online giving fans a look at what they might have gotten from Donald Glover’s exciting take. Deadpool is riding the wave of his own success and appropriately celebrating his own second anniversary, not even of his theatrical debut, but of his relase on Blu-ray! And just in time for the sequel this collector’s package fits well with the new Deapdool 2 posters, Twitter contests and much more.
Fox is releasing the new Deadpool 1 Blu-ray and 4K UHD steelbook today with the help of Best Buy and Wal-Mart. The Blu-ray version pictured below comes with a number of special extras including Deleted and Extended scenes with optional commentary from Director Tim Miller. There will also be a Gag Reel, Deadpool’s “Fun Sack”, an audio commentary from Tim Miller and Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefield, commentary from writers Paul Wernick, Rhett Reese, and star Ryan Reynolds, From comics to screen… to screen, and galleries including a veritable pinata of concept art, pre-visualization sketches and much more for the Deadpool fan in your life.
Interested fans will also be able to celebrate with unique collectible packaging, special party favors in the form of car decals, stickers, temporary tattoos, and paper dolls to help fans live out their “most depraved Wade Wilson fantasies.” Best Buy will be getting in on the fun as well with that special steelbook (pictured below) exclusive and collected party favors. The steelbook also adds a pair of special collectible patches for die-hard fans.
The second-anniversary celebration is a part of the promotional push for Deadpool 2, dropping in like unexpected fan-favorite new character “Peter”, X-Force’s trusty human team member. Deadpool 2 is on track to be Fandango’s Top R-Rated seller. They’ve also broken Regal Cinema’s advanced ticket sale record. The biggest strength that Deadpool brings to the table is the unique promotional campaign and that continues here with this re-release.
That confidence is paying off if those ticket sales are any indication. Co-creator Rob Liefield is confident that X-Force could compete with the Avengers and Fox needs that pay off as they prepare for the Disney/Fox merger. One of the biggest concerns for fans about the merger is the fate of Deadpool and fans wanting him to remain the same R-rated foul-mouthed antihero he’s always been. Thankfully if this surprise Blu-ray release and promotional campaign is any indication they don’t have to worry about a thing.
