Fox’s Deadpool is the gift that keeps on giving. Not only has it proven that true-to-the-source-material superhero movies can be successful even if they’re rated R, but it may even give us the long-awaited Goon adaptation that director Tim Miller has been trying to get off the ground for years. Nearly two months after the movie hit theaters, it’s still churning out new treats for fans to enjoy.
The latest goodies related to the film are several pieces of concept art for Colossus. Similar to the Negasonic Teenage Warhead concept art that was previously released, the Colossus art shows a few different takes on the character to give the filmmakers options depending on how they wanted the Russian mutant portrayed.
Concept artist Alexander Lozano recently released some of the concept art images he created for Colossus in Deadpool. According to CBM, Lozano tried multiple variations on similar themes to what was eventually seen in the movie before settling on the final design. You can see Lozano’s alternate takes on Colossus below:
Explaining the different designs, Lozano said that he wasn’t sure exactly how the film would use Colossus and the X-Men so he wanted to leave the options open for Miller and the crew. According to Lozano:
While some of the other looks could have been interesting, most fans would probably agree that it’s for the best that Colossus didn’t use the hood in the character version that appeared in the film. That said, it’s interesting to note that all of the versions of the character appear in his armored form. We know that he was always armored in the movie, but if the concept art is any indication, then having him appear both armored and unarmored was never even in consideration.
“Before the ‘final design’ was found, I tried a few different ways. At that point of time, I didn’t know if Colossus was planned as a ‘walking around in bright daylight’ character or more of a ‘hide in the shadows’ hero like in the old X-Men days. So I played around with a Darth Maul-hoodie and the idea to place the ‘X’ very subtle on his chest with the endings of his scarf. I also wanted to repeat the ripples in his arms with the design of the boots. …and a lot of possibilities to fix all the X-Men mansion keys at his pants.”
As with Negasonic, the concept art that Lozano showed off gives us a better idea of how Deadpool developed into what we saw on the big screen. While the end result this time isn’t as different as Negasonic was, there’s still an evolution that occurred before Colossus took on his final form. It will be interesting to see how Deadpool 2 evolves if similar concept art is revealed once it’s in theaters, too.
