Star Crystal Reed confirms production on DC Universe’s Swamp Thing show is underway. Part of DC’s efforts to expand their reach is through the launch of their streaming service DC Universe. Although Titans is the only original show currently available, filming on their next live-action series from the mind of Aquaman director James Wan has now begun.
After already announcing a slate of shows heading to DC Universe, it was revealed that Wan would be staying in business with DC through Swamp Thing. There’s been no shortage of news on the show over the last several weeks, as casting continued to be announced at a steady pace. It all began with Crystal Reed joining the series as its lead, Abby Arcane - a doctor who investigates a new virus plaguing the swamp of her hometown in Louisiana. It’s in this process she meets Alec Holland, the man who will become Swamp Thing. Andy Bean and Derek Mears were recently cast as the two different halves of the titular role. It likely won’t be too long before Holland and Arcane meet, now that cameras are rolling.
Reed shared the news on her Instagram recently that Swamp Thing is now filming. Instead of showing the first look at her as Arcane, the Gotham and Teen Wolf alum instead took a photo of Underworld director Len Wiseman behind the camera as he shoots the first episode. But, as filming continues on for the next several months, Reed could certainly continue to share additional updates on Swamp Thing.
Even though the series is called Swamp Thing, it appears that Reed’s Arcane will actually be the main character in the story. With this in mind, it is only fitting that she’s the one to provide a behind-the-scenes look at the start of production. She’ll be joined on set by a cast that only continues to grow. Jennifer Beals was one of the earlier additions to Swamp Thing, while Kevin Durand is the most recent addition as DC comics villain The Floronic Man.
Now that production has kicked off for Swamp Thing, it’ll have roughly seven months or so to film before any episodes air. The tentative release schedule for DC Universe has the creature-focused series slated to begin airing June 2019. A proper premiere date will be announced further down the line, but the summer season is currently expected to be where Swamp Thing launches. Writer Gary Dauberman says the series will be scary and violent, so the mature angle for the DC Universe original shows will continue with Swamp Thing. Of course, interest in the series could largely depend on how Swamp Thing actually looks in the live-action setting, so hopefully that reveal won’t be too far away.
