The team behind DC Universe Online wants to ensure that the game is around for at least another ten years. The superhero MMO has just recently hit it’s ninth year since launch, and has remained fairly popular in the gaming world. The title currently has almost twenty million users and was the greatest source of free-to-play revenue for the PlayStation systems in 2014.

DC Universe Online was originally developed by Daybreak Games, but it recently restructured into three separate teams: Dimensional Ink Games, Darkpaw Games, and Rogue Planet Games. This move came after Daybreak Games had several large layoffs in order to “optimize” the company. These three studios are still a part of Daybreak, but each team now focuses on a specific game. After the restructuring Dimensional Ink Games took control of DC Universe Online.

During an interview with Wccftech the CEO of Dimensional Ink Games, Jack Emmert, stated that his team wants to see DC Universe Online hit the twenty year mark. His thought is that if Everquest (another Daybreak Games property) can celebrate twenty years, then DC Universe Online can do it to. Along with that Emmert wants his team to continue to roll out new content and possibly update the game’s engine, but also says, “Another consideration is just updating what we have with Unreal Engine 3, as Batman Arkham certainly showed that you can do amazing things on Unreal Engine 3, so it’s really weighing the time, the cost and what we could get out of it.”

DC Universe Online has never really reached large mainstream success, but it has maintained a decently sized player base for quite some time. A lot of the reason that fans have continued to come back to the game is that it gets sizable updates fairly often. For example, in 2018 there was an Aquaman update that allowed players to explore Atlantis. Then last year the game capitalized on the success of Shazam by having an update that had Shazam team up with Justice League Dark. DC Universe has managed to stay relevant over the last nine years because of these timely and intriguing updates.

Most video games, even those with online components, achieve mainstream popularity and then slowly die out. Most of the time a game stays popular until the next big thing comes along and pries that popularity away. DC Universe Online on the other hand has managed to maintain a solid fan base for almost ten years that shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. If Dimensional Ink Games continues the way that it has, DC Universe Online could very well have another ten years left in it’s system.
