The DC Universe got a little bit larger today, with the popular streaming service expanding the size of its comic book library. Despite this, the subscription fee will remain the same at $7.99 per month or $74.99 for a full year.
Launching on September 15, 2018 to rave reviews, DC Universe is an online streaming service unlike any other. While comparable services offer on-demand video, original programming and e-book access, DC Universe is one of the few electronic resources that provide all three. Still, for all the great things that DC Universe presents, its online comic book archive has been the most poorly promoted aspect of the service when compared to its digital collection of classic DC Comics inspired television series and movies and new shows like Titans and Young Justice: Outsiders.
DC Universe took steps to rectify that issue today, with a press release announcing that the size of its online library of comic books and graphic novels would be expanding, effective immediately. The online archive is forecast to hold twice as many titles as it currently does by the end of March 2019. It will also hold a larger variety of titles and more complete runs as part of the permanent collection, though new series will be made available and removed on a monthly basis.
“Fans want a place to discover new titles and the opportunity to enjoy full arcs of iconic and notable storylines from start to finish,” said Sam Ades, senior vice president and general manager, DC Digital Services. “We are listening to fans and responding with an expanded comic book offering that improves the overall DC UNIVERSE experience.”
The chief complaint many fans had about the online comic book archive early on was that while it offered a wide variety of books, it contained very few complete runs. While a reader could check out a number of first issues, they couldn’t read many full stories. For instance, when the Titans series first launched, fans could only read the first 12 issues of the classic Marv Wolfman and George Perez run on the New Teen Titans series that inspired the show.
Thankfully, DC Universe seems to have learned their lesson, even without the announced expansion. Fans of Young Justice can currently enjoy all 26 issues of the tie-in comic based on the first two seasons of the show and an exclusive prequel comic set before the events of the third season, Young Justice: Outsiders. They can also experience all 55 issues of the 1998 Young Justice series by Peter David and Todd Nanuck which inspired the television series.
Today’s announced list of new releases seems to have been built with the future of DC Universe’s programming schedule in mind. Starting today, subscribers can access the whole of Alan Moore’s legendary run on Swamp Thing, which is being adapted into a new live-action series. Before the end of March, they will be able to read the whole of the 1999 series JSA, which is the primary influence upon the upcoming Stargirl show. All in all, DC Universe is starting to sound like a better deal than ever for comic book readers.
