Warner Bros. has moved its animated DC Super Pets back a year from 2021 to 2022. Following the combined success of Aquaman and Shazam!, the DC movie franchise appears to have found it groove by moving away from Marvel Studios’ shared universe model, in favor of a looser sense of continuity. And while WB currently has new Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Batman films in the pipeline, its revised approach has also allowed room for movies based on lesser-known and more esoteric comic book superheroes.

Indeed, one of the more intriguing titles on the DC slate at the moment is Super Pets, an animated feature about famous superheroes’ pets like Krypto the Super-Dog, Streaky the Supercat, and Wonder Woman’s animal sidekick Jumpa (a flying kangaroo). The Super Pets have been part of the DC Comics universe since the 1960s, but have yet to get their shot at fame in a full-length film of their own. Fortunately, that’s about to change… just twelve months later than previously announced.

Super Pets has now officially moved back from May 21, 2021 to a May 20, 2022 release date. At the moment, the animated DC superhero adventure is scheduled to open two weeks after an untitled Marvel Cinematic Universe film, and a week before an untitled Disney live-action movie.

Suffice it to say, Super Pets will be a far cry from anything else DC has lined up to hit the big screen over the next three years. The film is being directed by Wreck-It Ralph cowriters Jared Stern and Sam Levine, so it’s safe to assume it’ll hew closer to a comedic DC adaptation like Teen Titans Go! To the Movies than DC’s more serious animated fare (in case there was ever any real doubt). This isn’t Stern’s first rodeo in the world of animated DC action-comedy, either. The writer-director also worked on the script for the acclaimed LEGO Batman Movie, which is all the more assurance that Super Pets has found its way into the hands of the right creatives.

As it stands, Super Pets and Aquaman 2 are the only DC films scheduled to arrive in 2022 for the time being. There’s a pretty reasonable chance this will change in the future, given the sheer number of DC Comics adaptations that are reported to be in some stage of development right now. And while WB is being careful to not over-saturate the market with DC movies for the next few years, there shouldn’t be a whole lot of overlap between the Aquaman sequel, something as unique as Super Pets, and whatever other DC titles the studio ultimately decides to add to its lineup that year.
